Trick? Or Treat?: Tips & Tricks on the Perfect Way to Thrift Shop

Whether you're shopping for your Halloween costumes, or just shopping in general, thrifting can sometimes be a little spooky. So today I'm here to give you my tips and tricks on how to get the best bang for your buck!

Tip 1. Give Yourself Time.

There are plenty of things to look at in the thrift store and you need time. Give yourself a couple of hours, but don't come on weekends. Weekends are the most crowded. The more people, the fewer finds.

Tip 2. Empty Your Car.

You never know what you are going to find at the thrift store. You should always be prepared just in case you accidently buy a couch.

Tip 3. Check for Sales.

Make sure to pay attention to your way into the store. Usually, they have a sign letting you the "Color of the Week," They also tend to have holiday sales. But if you are ever unsure, never be afraid to ask an employee.

Tip 4. Search out of Season.

Most people donate their clothing when the season's pass. Fall is a great time for silk shirts, tank tops, jean shorts, sandals. Summer is great for cashmere sweaters, winter jackets, and fluffy boots.

Tip 5. Watch for New Merch.

Employees are always restocking the shelves. If you see someone with a cart putting new things on the shelf, keep an eye on that section. Once they've moved, head on in.

Tip 6. White Things and Rugs.

Good rugs and perfect white tees are RARE. Most white shirts have some sort of blemish, hole, or stain. It's a total treat!

Tip 7. If It's Smelly, Skip It.

I always have an open mind when it comes to secondhand clothing, since everything can be washed. But if it just naturally skinks, I'd pass.

Tip 8. Oldies are Goodies

Never be afraid to buy something that's not from this era. Old-school nothing is currently in style, and you should have an open mind.

The last tip on the list is..

Tip 9. Don't Spill the Beans.

One secret about thrifting is you don't talk about thrifting. Never be ashamed to shop secondhand, but if you find a good steal, never let anyone know where you found it.

Thrifting should be a fun experience and you should enjoy it. Make sure what you're buying excites you because let's be real, darkness by 4 o'clock can be pretty depressing.

Happy Halloween!
