Good Charlotte protégés, Waterparks, released the lead single off their debut album, “Double Dare” (out November 4th) and they’ve hit the ground running, displaying personality, catchiness, and new sonic dynamics. If you thought they blew up over this Summer’s Warped Tour, this proves we haven’t seen anything yet.

“Hey. tell me what you want me to say, you know I’m stupid for you…” is an attention grabber for the way it sounds: like it’s on the radio and in the best way possible. (Possible foreshadowing for this band?) Awsten Knight’s high notes are fitting for this song in a way that comes across as sweeter than anything in their discography. Their usual quirkiness is prevalent straight away with lyrics like, “You’re yellow, I'm natural blue, let's get together and be green like my insides.” These lines also serve as some fun references to Ciara Hanna, Awsten’s girlfriend who starred as a yellow Power Ranger, and an older song of theirs, “I'm a Natural Blue”. The background piano is also a nice touch in the first verse too.

The song goes on to be a love story, a sing-along, and a display of new tricks from the band. It’s poppier than their previous releases, but that’s not a bad thing by any means. Lyrically, it’s what you’d expect from them and serves as a good introduction to anyone who is looking into Waterparks. They’ll make converts of casual listeners through their musicianship though. Geoff Wiggington and Awsten’s guitar parts, along with Otto Wood’s drums put on a strong show of in-your-face pop punk that anyone can appreciate. While we can’t be sure that this is indicative of how the rest of “Double Dare” (out November 4th) will sound, we can be sure that this is a good direction the band is growing in. Give it a listen and keep an ear out!
